We have built our practice on personal service and attention to detail. We do not believe that one size fits all. Our aim is to provide you with a proposal when you need it and tailored to your requirements.
We work directly with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).
We have a network of attorneys based in most overseas territories who, like us, are members of the International Trademark Association (INTA). We maintain regular contact with them by exchanging business and sending and receiving enquiries. We meet many of them at least once a year and have visited some of their offices. We select those best suited to the task.
We are regulated by the Intellectual Property Regulation Board (www.ipreg.org.uk). We are members of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (www.citma.org.uk) and the list of professional representatives before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
Karen is an experienced trade marks paralegal. She is a fully qualified CITMA Paralegal and has over 25 years’ experience of working with trade marks and trade mark portfolios.
Starting as a junior secretary at Fitzpatricks, her talent, organisation and enthusiasm was clear. She became a paralegal in 1994, working directly with Alasdair, responsible for managing trade mark portfolios, watching services and other administration. In 2000, her role changed to accommodate Alasdair’s new position as Managing Director, introducing new responsibilities including attending client meetings and handling confidential management matters. Throughout this time, she maintained her commitment to her trade mark work. In 2006, the opportunity arose to be part of setting up Ancient Hume.
Karen designed and implemented the operational systems which are used across the practice. These include the management of dates and databases, portfolio reporting, trade mark renewals, trade mark watching and the processing of trade mark applications. She is also a highly skilled researcher.
She is responsible for the renewals side of the business. She also deals with all administration of the practice and is heavily involved in all client work which is carried out by Ancient Hume. She is regulated as a Paralegal by IPReg. Karen is approachable, helpful and extremely knowledgeable.
Karen enjoys spending time with her two sons and her husband, fitness classes and also the occasional gin and tonic.
Alasdair is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and European Trade Mark Attorney. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, an authorised representative before the EUIPO and founder of Ancient Hume.
He began his trade mark work as a Hearing Officer in the Trade Marks Registry (UK IPO). In 1991, he left to join Fitzpatricks in Glasgow.
At Fitzpatricks, Alasdair worked with Alan Fitzpatrick gaining valuable experience on the commercial aspects of running a trade marks practice, as well as insight on how to achieve the best results for clients. His mentor, Ellis Wynne Evans, provided valuable guidance on working with the IP bar and counsel. Alasdair led the Trade Marks team at Fitzpatricks and in 2000 became Managing Director when he was part of a buy-out team of the business.
When the company was sold in 2006 he left to set up Ancient Hume with Karen Pollock. Ancient Hume has since become a leading trade marks practice with a reputation for personal service, bespoke advice and achieving good results for clients. His and Karen’s formidable working partnership now extends for more than 25 years.
Alasdair has experience in most trade mark matters, both contentious and commercial. He represents a wide range of clients from the UK, EU and elsewhere in matters before the UK Trade Marks Registry, the EUIPO and WIPO. His significant experience means that he now has a network of trusted contacts in many different countries, including trade mark attorneys, law firms and counsel, allowing him to help clients protect their brands and solve challenges at home and abroad.
World Trademark Review (WTR 1000) 2018 describes Alasdair as “client oriented, calm and meticulous”. He is regulated as an Attorney by IPReg.
Alasdair enjoys sixties music, cars and spending time with his two grandsons.
